AN EXPERIENCE ABOVE THE WAISTLINE-7.png

Everyone is deathly afraid of at least one thing, right? Some people are scared of snakes or rats or drying which is completely normal. I’m deathly afraid of spiders, although I’m not too sure why, and clowns, and yes ‘IT’ did scare the pants off me. I know why I am scared of them though. I was about 5 or 6 at the time and I was at a circus with my mum. The clowns were putting on a skit where they got 4 or 5 audience members to come down to the stage and play invisible instruments. One clown asked me and wouldn’t take no for an answer, to the point where he walked all the way down to the end of the aisle where I was sitting, to physically take my hand and walk me down. Yeah, clowns are a big no-no for me.

Whilst I have my regular fears, I also have some strange ones too. People usually give me a ‘wtf’ or an ‘uh, what?’ look when I tell them for the first time, which I can totally understand since I have never met anyone else who has been scared of the same things as me.

My first strange fear is of rabbits. I know, weird, right? Well yes, it is haha. When I was a kid I used to love watching Wallace and Gromit on TV, so naturally I also watched their movie ‘Wallace and Gromit and the Were-Rabbit’ I never had a major issue with rabbits before this point, except for a slight distaste for them since there used to be a crap ton of them in my garden in Ireland. They were our version of a pest basically. Anyway, since watching that movie, my distaste has turned into an irrationally strange fear.

My second fear is of butterflies. They freak me out to the point that I will run away from them screaming and ducking. I don’t have an issue with most bugs or insects like cicadas, grasshoppers or stick insects but because of SpongeBob SquarePants – yes, I said SpongeBob haha – I can’t deal with butterflies. There’s an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants where SpongeBob went to Sandy Cheeks’ house, dome thing. Since Sandy lives on ‘land’ her dome is filled with oxygen and SpongeBob lives in the water and I guess soaks up water to survive or something, he ends up wearing a fishbowl on his head. Whilst wearing his fishbowl, a butterfly lands on the side of it and the camera/animators zoom in on the butterfly’s face and body. Basically, it was an unnerving sight that pushed me from normal to super freaked.

You can watch that scene from SpongeBob SquarePants here if you would like to be as freaked out as I was.

So, as you can see my fears are pretty weird and very irrational but to me, they are as rational as a slice of bread in my mind.

Do you have any fears, strange or normal? Comment them below!
